March is Women's Month The third month of the year is here. Whew! 2011 is off to a running start. Where does the time go? What progress have we made since January 1? Well, we're still distributing our compilation CD with 10 fabulous female composers, the culmination of four years of Women in Jazz South Florida, Inc., since March 2007. This, I feel, is commendable and I'm really anticipating the second project with more music from women composers - Volume II! Our concentration is on May 14, when Rick DellaRatta will perform a benefit concert for our organization at ArtServe. The VIP list is full and regular-priced tickets go on sale, now, for $35. We would like to have two shows. This depends on how many tickets are sold by April 30, at which time we'll decide to have one or two shows at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. The proceeds from our CD and ticket sales will go towards our tour. Heidi Richards, one of our members publishes an online magazine and will feature our 10 fabulous composers in the April edition. She's offering our members the opportunity to advertise in her magazine and part of the proceeds of your ad will be donated to WIJSF. www.WEMagazineforWomen.com On the NEWS tip, there's a snafu in the payment from Miami Beach Cultural Division for Community Musicwomen in January 2011. We've been assured this will be resolved in an expedient manner. However, considering that I just received payment from a grant project in New York, last March 2010, yes that would be 11 months and 25 days, later, I got paid, I have my concerns about the payment from Miami Beach. Also, in the news, 1900 teachers (not just music and art teachers) but all the teachers in Providence, RI, received pink slips last week. My reaction was, "Hmmmm, what would happen if that spread across the nation? Children would be sent home to their parents and schools would close down." I would love to know what your thoughts are on that matter. Watch your email for notice of the next meeting, when fliers for our May 14 Jazz For Peace fundraiser will be distributed. |

WHAT WE DO:
[See HERSTORY
and JAZZWOMEN DIRECTORY]
Besides increasing our membership
of musicians and supporters, we continue to submit grant
applications for performance funding. In January, we present The SEAS Grant office of Broward Schools requested that we do a $5,000 program for just $2,000. I'm declining because the project involves having two musicians score four to six original compositions for big band that would be performed by Parkway Middle Jazz Band and Vocal Ensemble. It is evident that the SEAS committee is unaware of the cost of having 32+ charts done for just ONE song. The grant from Miami Beach was reduced from $5,000 to $4,000. Then, we were invited to perform for FREE for a two-hour audition at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport with the promise that, if they like us, they will pay a band of three or more $250. I'm convinced that the world has gone mad, when it comes to the value people place on the service musicians render. The only answer I can think of is, "NO!"
We continue to work on raising funds for air fare
and hotel for our EuroTour for Peace in
June-July 2011. We're offering a great opportunity to one or more
corporate underwriters, looking for visibility in Europe for their
business. We will take a banner with us with our logo and the logos
of our underwriters who provide us with a tax-deductible
contribution of $10k-$100,000 for travel expense
funding.
HOW UNDERWRITERS CAN
Every time we are on stage, radio, television or reviewed in a
newspaper, our
The return on this investment cannot be determined, since the
publicity needs of corporations interested in underwriting this
venture are not known at this time. However, this should be considered
a huge opportunity for any corporation looking to get their branding
into international business circles.
EUROTOUR FOR PEACE June 23-July 23, 2011:
Our goal is to perform original music in each of these cities with the expectation of being paid for each concert in order to build up our touring fund for future tours.
Please
ask investors interested in supporting
women's music on this international tour
to contact me, immediately. The artists slated to
travel with us are on our MISSION page.
We look forward to identifying the corporations that will take
advantage of this great opportunity to expose their products and/or
services to the international community through our EuroTour 2011.
Thank you,
"Keep your dream close to your
heart!" ~
