At the top of our agenda for this month is the Women in Jazz Cruise scheduled for Friday November 11 to Monday November 14, 2011, aboard Royal Caribbean's Majesty of the Seas. Registration is at www.wijsfcruise.com and full payment of $347 is due at this time. It is imperative that you make your reservation by October 24. You MUST have a valid passport! For more information, contact Marika Guyton. We anticipate a wonderful cruise that will help raise funds for our organization.

Our condolences to WIJSF member Lorna Lesperance whose mother transitioned on Thursday, September 29. Our heartfelt love goes out to Lorna and members are encouraged to donate $5 for the floral spray we will send in the name of WIJSF, INC.

We're collecting 10 original songs from members for our WIJSF Compilation CD Volume II to be released in January 2012. If you are a composer and have a song you want to contribute, please contact Joan at divajc47@yahoo.com. There is a $105 fee due in October to cover the cost of artwork and reproduction. In return, you will receive 20 of the CDs for promotional purposes. See Volume I

So far, we have these contributors:

  • Beverly Lewis, Umbria, Italy
  • Mimi Johnson, Atlanta, GA
  • Juanita Johnson, Fort Lauderdale, FL
  • Linda Dachtyl, Columbus, OH
  • Lenore Raphael, New York, NY

On September 30, Wings On Women, a subsidiary of Wingspan Seminars, LLC, founded by WIJSF member Priscilla Dames Blake, honored Joan Cartwright with a PEA'CE Award for her work to empower women. Cartwright will be honored on November 9, as Spirit of Excellence Music Leader of the Year by the American Business Women's Association (ABWA).

To end a very hot and humid summer, Joan Cartwright cruised the Caribbean on the Carnival Freedom as the guest of Blacks Over 40 with pianist Jamila Sahar. "We had a wonderful time and this cruise made the whole of 2011 worth every moment," Joan said. Many thanks to Anthony Jackson, his sister Phyllis and Myrtle Naylor for this wonderful opportunity and adventure. See photos at www.wijsf.com/photos.htm

Martha, Myrtle and Joan aboard Carnival Freedom, September 10, 2011

On Thursday, September 15, Jamila Sahar and Joan Cartwright performed  a private concert aboard the Carnival Freedom, after leaving the port of Tortola.

In Tortola, they met Alnando, who said he has a license to open a music school and invited Joan and Jamila, who just completed her Master's degree in Music at Florida International University, to come to Tortola to teach music. It's a very tempting proposal!

Go to these links and, if you're a member of WordPress, leave your comments.

On Friday, October 7 @ 5:00 to 5:30 p.m. EST, Joan Cartwright will interview vocalist and composer Dee Daniels on Musicwoman Internet Radio.

GOOD NEWS FOR WOMEN IN JAZZ!

THE AMERICAN FEDERATION OF MUSICIANS - PENSION PLAN

It's our joy to share the gift of music with others. However, we may overlook the need to care for ourselves or feel inadequate in this activity because we don’t have “regular” jobs. Maybe we have no idea where to begin. What I’m referring to is a pension for our retirement years. Few musicians have a 401K package and that is even unreliable, in today’s financial environment.

The American Federation of Musicians offers an opportunity with a retirement and pension package that is in the top 1% in the country. With contributions of up to 15% of their earnings, musicians get vested in only five (5) years!

Learn about the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) - Local 655 online at www.afm655.com and explore this great opportunity. Women live longer and we must prepare for our later years, in a deliberate manner.

I just reinstated my membership. A representative of Local AFM 655 will meet with us to share the benefits of membership. Let’s take advantage this, now! I’m on the 5-year plan! ~ Melody Cole - 954-829-6009 - melocole1@aol.com
